Main activity

In the competence area Analytics & Microstructure, research and practice-oriented topics on structure and microstructure as well as chemical composition of plastics and composites form the main focus of work.

The following fields of activity offer an excerpt of the work currently in progress:

  • Investigations into the aging behavior of plastics and composites under the influence of media, temperature or UV radiation
  • Correlation of structure and property relationships along material development chains or after individual processing steps, e.g.:
  • Determination of structural properties (glass transition temperature, decomposition temperature, melting property, degree of crystallization, viscosity) and their effect on mechanical, chemical and physical as well as system-related material properties
  • Identification of decomposition products (e.g. gases)
  • Analysis of material composition:
    • – Identification of plastic type,
    • – batch comparisons,
    • – filler content,
    • – homogeneity
  • Preparation of failure analyses on plastic-based semi-finished products and components
  • Characterization of the crosslinking process of thermoset and elastomeric materials at defined reaction conditions (T, p, etc.), post-shrinkage behavior
  • Thermokinetic calculations and simulations of degradation and curing
