Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr.-Ing. E.h. Dr. Sc. h.c. Karl-Heinz Kloos geboren 1930, promovierte 1960 an der TH Darmstadt am Institut für Werkstoffkunde (IfW) unter der Leitung von Prof. Wiegand. Nach seiner Promotion setzte er seine Arbeit am Institut für Werkstoffkunde fort und hatte einen Lehrauftrag von 1961 bis 1965 zu Mess- und Prüfverfahren der Werkstoffkunde an der TH Darmstadt.
Von 1965 bis 1973 war er stellvertretender Leiter der Staatlichen Materialprüfanstalt Darmstadt. Im Jahr 1971 habilitierte er sich an der TH Darmstadt mit einer Arbeit über die “Werkstoffpaarungseigenschaften und ihren Einfluss auf das Gleitreibungsverhalten in Fertigung und Konstruktion.”
Von 1973 bis 1995 leitete Prof. Kloos das Institut für Werkstoffkunde an der TH Darmstadt mit insgesamt 150 Mitarbeiter:innen. Zudem war er von 1981 bis 1990 Vizepräsident der Arbeitsgemeinschaft industrieller Forschungsvereinigungen (AiF).
