Plastics & Composites
Materials testing, Diagnostics & Modeling

Main activity

The Materials Testing, Diagnostics and Modeling competence area combines the research activities of the Plastics and Composites competence area in the field of strength behavior and service life analysis of materials, semi-finished products and components made of plastic-based materials.

These include, for example:

  • Determination and evaluation of the mechanical strength of thermoplastics as a function of defined system parameters (e.g. determination of the creep rupture internal pressure strength of plastic-based pipes based on DIN EN ISO 1167-1 to -4 for applications in the fields of drinking water and gas supply, drinking water and heating installations, wastewater disposal and industrial pipes
  • Diagnostics and modeling of the service life of semi-finished products and components (e.g. service life analysis for plastic-based pipes according to DIN EN ISO 9080)
  • Integrity assessment and modeling of remaining service life of thermoplastic semi-finished products and components
  • Effects of residual stresses on the service life in plastic-based semi-finished products and components
  • Assessment of the chemical resistance of plastics
  • Assessment and modeling of thermal insulation properties of plastic-based material systems, semi-finished products and components (e.g. pipes)
  • Effects of material composition and manufacturing technology on mechanical, thermal and other functional properties

Together with the competence fields Analytics and Microstructure as well as Interfacial Phenomena and Design, research projects and research cooperations are successfully handled on an interdisciplinary basis.
